Read Opening Statement on 22 January by Carol Bellamy, Executive Director, UNICEF

Tuesday, 23 January 2000: On Monday, the Executive Board heard a farewell statement from the outgoing President, Ambassador Anwarul Karim Chowdhury of Bangladesh, and opening statements by incoming President Ambassador Movses Abelian of Armenia and UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy. The Board then elected representatives of the WHO/UNICEF/UNFPA Coordinating Committee on Health and the UNESCO/UNICEF Joint Committee on Education, for the biennium 2001-2002.

Following adoption of the agenda, the Board considered the report of the Executive Director, which is also the annual report to the Economic and Social Council, and adopted a decision on activities of the Joint Inspection Unit.

In the afternoon meeting, delegations turned to discussion of UNICEF country notes, beginning with the programmes in Eastern and Southern Africa. Mr. Urban Jonsson, Regional Director, made an opening statement, followed by interventions by delegations. The afternoon session concluded with a statement by Ms. Rima Salah, Regional Director for West and Central Africa.

Today, the Board will continue discussion of the West and Central Africa programmes, followed by consideration of programmes in Latin America and the Caribbean, East Asia and the Pacific, and South Asia.
