2nd Preparatory Meeting Begins for UN Special Session on Children

WHO: More than 2,000 Government and NGO Representatives

WHAT: The second of three preparatory meetings for the 2001 UN Special Session on Children, which will take place September 19-21 in New York.

WHEN: Monday 29 January – Friday 2 February, 2001

WHERE: UN Secretariat, Conference Rooms 1 & 3

WHY: The 2001 UN Special Session on Children in September will assess global progress on goals set at the groundbreaking 1990 World Summit for Children. More than 3,000 delegates including Heads of State and a record number of NGO representatives will also embrace a new agenda for improving the survival, health, education, development and protection of children and youth.

The second of three preparatory meetings will take place this week and involve Government delegates, a number of Special Representatives sent by Heads of State, and representatives of more than 400 NGOs.

The three main items on the agenda for this week are:

Review of progress on the end-decade goals
Review of draft outcome document
Organizational arrangements for the Special Session in September

A third preparatory meeting will be held in June 2001. The first was held in June 2000.
