Yangon, 19 November 2005 – Today UNICEF hosted a Universal Children’s Day festival in Yangon in commemoration of the 16th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

At today’s festival, children from various backgrounds were able to meet with UNICEF Myanmar's new celebrity "Champions for Children" – pop singer Phyu Phyu Kyaw Thein, kick boxer Lone Chaw, Miss Myanmar Ei Rupa Win, writer Juu, and actor Lwin Moe.  The popular rock / rap group the Examplez also performed at the event.

UNICEF’s new Champions for Children will work to draw public attention to important child rights like education and health, and help inform young people about steps they themselves can take to enhance their own wellbeing.

In addition to a live concert, today’s Universal Children’s Day festival featured activities to help young people learn more about the Convention on the Rights of the Child, including computer game quizzes about HIV/AIDS, as well as children’s rights.  Other activities included face painting, caricature drawings, a magic show, and a drawing wall for children to freely express their ideas.

“You are Myanmar’s future,” UNICEF Representative Carroll Long told the group of children at today’s event.  “It is important for you to be involved in all of the issues affecting your lives.  The more you are able to learn about your rights and exercise your responsibilities, the brighter your future will be.”

After the morning's event, UNICEF’s Champions for Children delivered boxes full of books and games to dozens of orphanages and children's institutions around the greater Yangon area.

The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) provides that young people have the right to express their ideas, have their opinions respected, and learn about their rights.  Myanmar ratified the CRC in 1991.
