Germany donates one million US dollars to UNICEF for children's education in MyanmarYangon, 04 February 2005 – Today the Federal Republic of Germany announced that it has donated US$ 1,000,000 to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Myanmar to improve underprivileged children’s access to primary school and enhance the quality of education they are receiving. The funds will be used to help children living in 500 of Myanmar’s poorest communities receive a better quality, “child friendly” primary education through a package of interventions that includes the introduction of modern child-centered learning approaches in the classroom, the provision of quality child-centered learning materials, and better ancillary amenities such as clean water and sanitation facilities. The funds will also be used to help children from impoverished families defray educational costs through the provision of basic school supplies. “Education plays a crucial role in children’s development, and paves the way for their future advancement,” noted UNICEF Representative Carroll Long. “Thanks to the generosity of the German government, more children in Myanmar will have the opportunity to enhance their development and realize their dreams.” UNICEF’s primary education program will particularly focus on keeping children in school during their first two years, after which they stand a much better chance of completing primary school.
