Polio Immunization Campaign to cover 3.4 million children in Myanmar advised by WHO-UNICEF Mission
Yangon, 28 February 2011: The visiting mission from the WHO South-Asia Regional Office and UNICEF advised on conducting two rounds of high quality, well planned supplemental immunization activities (SIA)* to vaccinate 3.4 million children under the age of 5 years with oral polio vaccine (tOPV) in 115 Townships in Myanmar. This is in response to the case detected in Yamethin Township in Mandalay Division in December 2010. Although there is no evidence of community transmission, the planned campaigns are intended to ensure that the risk of transmission is completely eliminated. The best time for the campaign would be before the start of the rainy season in May.
