Day Care Centre for children with disabilities opened in Niksic Municipality
NIKSIC, June 14, 2010 - The second Day Care Centre for children with disabilities was opened in Montenegro in Niksic municipality on Monday, 14 June 2010.
At the moment, five children with disabilities are attending the Centre. They are engaged in various educational and creative activities with professionals and they return to their families at the end of the day.
Their parents are able to work, have their children live with them at home and include them in the life of the local community.
UNICEF Montenegro Representative Noala Skinner visited the Day Care Centre and congratulated Niksic for becoming one of the municipalities-leaders in the inclusion of children with disabilities.
“Children with disabilities have the same human rights and fundamental freedoms that all children enjoy. Ensuring the full enjoyment of their rights on an equal basis with other children is the responsibility not only of the government, but of every member of society,’’ said Noala Skinner.
Article 23 of the UN CRC refers to the rights of children with disabilities guaranteeing them the right to special care, education and training to help them enjoy a full and decent life in dignity and achieve the greatest degree of self-reliance and social integration possible.
UNICEF welcomes spreading of the network of day care centres in the country. At the moment, children with disabilities in Bijelo Polje and Niksic benefit from these services and in autumn children in Pljevlja will also have the same opportunities.
