UNICEF Annual Media Prize for 2006 awarded
The Jury for the annual UNICEF Media Prize in 2006 comprised of Mr. Antonije Pusic, National Ambassador for UNICEF in Montenegro, Mr. Dragoljub Vukovic, representative of the Montenegrin Media Institute, and Ms. Jadranka Milanovic, UNICEF Communication Officer.
Upon reviewing the entries for UNICEF's annual Media Prize for high quality and ethical reporting on children and children’s rights, the Jury unanimously decided that the award goes to Mr LJUBISA PEJOVIĆ for his radio programme «A Big Deprivation of Little Ridvan Cazim» broadcast on Radio Antena M.
The awarded radio piece enlightens the issue of discrimination and poverty of children through a story of a child who belongs to one of the most excluded population groups – the Roma. On the example of a boy who faces discriminatory attitudes on a daily basis and through conversation with him and his father, the author depicts the wider context of life conditions in which this child, and the entire Roma community to which he belongs, live.
The journalist respected the boy’s wish and request not to have his identity revealed, thus underlying the importance of ethical principle in reporting. In this radio programme, the author gave an opportunity to the boy to express his views, to have his voice heard, but at the same time did not reveal the boy’s identity, which is in line with the journalistic code of conduct and the principles of reporting on children and children’s rights.
The Jury assessed that the awarded story, and other stories like this, can make a significant contribution to the efforts for change of discriminatory stereotypes of behaviour in the society.
