Montenegro has become the 193rd State Party to the Convention on the Rights of the Child

2 February 2007 - Formerly part of the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro, the Republic of Montenegro held a referendum on full independence from the union on 21 May 2006. It was granted admission to the UN as the 192nd Member State by a vote of the General Assembly on 28 June 2006.

UNICEF celebrates 60th birthday in Podgorica

Podgorica, 14 December 2006 – On 11 December 2006, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) celebrated 60th anniversary of its work for and with children. Within the anniversary, an exhibition of old photographs representing UNICEF’s activities in Montenegro was opened tonight at 19:00 in Gallery “Art“ in Podgorica (Trg Republike 1). On this occasion, Antonije Pusic, UNICEF’s National Ambassador for Montenegro and children for primary school “Stampar Makarije” presented a song and music video “School from dreams” which they prepared to promote UNICEF’s programme “School without Violence”. The exhibition was opened by Slobodan Backovic, Montenegrin Minister of Education and Science and Ann-Lis Svensson, UNICEF Area Representative for Serbia, Croatia and Montenegro.

"School without Violence" campaign launch to raise funds to combat violence in schools.

Several Montenegrin companies have recognised the importance of the “School without Violence” programme and have already joined UNICEF efforts to combat violence in schools. Commercial Bank of Montenegro has adopted a school and has invited other companies in Montenegro to do the same. The Post Office of Montenegro is extensively supporting the initiative. Other companies supporting the “School without Violence” programme comprise: the Montenegrin Union of Employers, T-Com, T-Mobile, OBOD printing house, Mapa PR agency, as well as all printed and electronic media in Montenegro.

In order to help UNICEF’s initiative, Antonie Pusic, also known as Rambo Amadeus, who has been selected to be the first UNICEF National Ambassador for Montenegro, has joined the programme. He will use his creativity and celebrity status to help in the realisation of this campaign.

UNICEF Annual Prize for the Best Media Reporting on Children and Children’s Rights

UNICEF Office in Podgorica announces a competition for the annual prize for the best media reporting on children and children’s rights.
The aim of the prize is to promote high quality and ethical reporting in print and electronic media (dailies, weeklies and monthlies, magazines and news agencies) on children and children’s rights in Montenegro.
