Handing over supplies for Khuvsgul children
Murun soum, Khuvsgul aimag, 30 September 2013 – With the goal of improving child-friendliness of schools and kindergartens, UNICEF handed over supplies including ICT equipment, furniture, toys, kitchen tools and gers for the Student and Teacher Development Centers and the operation of mobile “ger” schools and kindergartens in Khuvsgul on 30 September. The supplies include essential equipment and materials for school doctors and social workers. In addition, UNICEF is also supporting three Buddhist Monasteries, Gandantegchenlin, Amarbayasgalant and Sain Nomun, for organizing Non-formal Education Equivalency Programme (NFE EP) trainings for over 120 monastic boys.
A total of 30,000 students from mainstream schools and about 1000 out-of-school children including children with disabilities and monastic boys in the target areas and Buddhist monasteries are estimated to benefit from this investment, which amounts to 1,038,490,525 MNT.
“UNICEF has a mandate to advocate for the protection of children's rights including right to education to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. We highly support the development of child friendly schools and kindergartens in Mongolia that have elements of inclusiveness, academic effectiveness, gender-sensitivity, a healthy, safe and protective environment with families and communities participation”, noted Mohamed M. Fall, UNICEF Representative in Mongolia.
Since 2012, UNICEF has been collaborating with the Local Governments of Khuvsgul province in social sectors, including education jointly implementing several interventions. Among these are Non formal education EP trainings for over 700 out-of-school children including children with disabilities and monastic boys, capacity building of education management staff and teachers in the areas of promotion of child friendly schools and kindergartens, education management and planning, interactive training methodologies, health education, child protection, WASH, early childhood development and education in emergencies.
UNICEF has supported the establishment of 13 ger kindergartens in remote soums and khoroos of Khuvsgul province and Nalaikh district. These now provide preschool education to 1000-1200 children every year.
Despite a 0.5 decrease in the national basic education, enrollment ratios of Khuvsgul and Nalaikh increased by 1.7 and 0.2, respectively in 2013. Pre-school enrollment ratio also increased by 1.6 percent in Khuvsgul and 9 percent in Nalaikh in the same academic year. Local education management staff have developed strategies to achieve a target of zero-out-of-school children by 2016. The design of these policies is largely driven by an enhanced focus on equity.
“The goal is that good practices from the target areas are replicated by the Government in other areas, which will definitely contribute to improving both access and quality of education in Mongolia and enabling the country to fully achieve Millenium Development Goal 2 on education and respective EFA goals by 2015”, continued Mr. Fall.
