„Cash for Education” – UNICEF provides financial support to children from families affected by floods
CHISINAU, 26 August 2010 - On the eve of the new school year, United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) jointly with the Ministry of Education distributed cash aid to the children from families affected by the floods produced this summer.
A total of 1 184 children of families left homeless or without farmland received aid. Children from families affected directly received 120 USD each, and those affected indirectly – 50 USD each, money intended for the preparation of the new school year.
The cash distribution took place on August 26, just on the eve of the new school year by special teams from the Ministry of Education. The beneficiaries have been selected based on the lists drawn up by local authorities.
The total cost of the initiative amounts to about 95,000 dollars, money provided by the Swiss Agency for Development (AED).
UNICEF jointly with the Ministry of Education has carried similar actions of preparation for the new 2009 and 2008 school year for the most affected children as a response to the floods of August 2008.
