UN Agencies in Moldova assist flood victims
On July 12, 500 packages of necessary hygiene products were transported to the distribution centers of Sărăteni and Obileni villages to be donated to families that have suffered from floods. Also, other 400 packages were offered to the flood victims on July 10. The action was organized by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), as an immediate response to the emergency situation that has been created in Moldova due to floods.
Packages contained essential sanitary products, such as soap, shampoo, detergent, pads, towels, as well as food of instant preparation. Packages have been purchased as a result of visits made by representatives of UN agencies in Moldova in flood affected areas and after the assessment of immediate needs of victims. Other sanitary kits designed to cover existing needs will be transported in the affected region during next few days.
Saturday, July 10, another initiative to help flood victims was launched by a youth group from Chisinau, which urged customers of different supermarkets from the capital to buy food products for flood victims. About 100 food and hygiene kits have been collected and transported to the affected regions with the support of International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Moldova. These actions represent UN Agencies’ first assistance steps for the victims. "We will continue to work closely with the Government of Moldova and stay close to people affected by floods, in order to provide urgent informational and humanitarian assistance needed at this stage", the UN representatives declared.
