UNICEF launches a water, sanitation and hygiene life-saving intervention in Libya
TRIPOLI, Libya, 1 June 2015 – More then 1700 internally displaced Tawergha families in nine camps to benefit from a water, sanitation and hygiene intervention led by UNICEF in partnership with municipalities and a local partner. The intervention is part of UNICEF national campaign ‘Together for Children’ launched in April 2015 with Libyan municipalities.

“A rapid assessment conducted by UNICEF revealed critical sanitation and hygiene conditions in Tawergha camps” says Mr. Ghassan Khalil, UNICEF Special Representative in Libya. “The urgent intervention aims at preventing water borne diseases and at providing a healthy environment for the children and their families” he adds.
The services provided at the IDP camps includes empting septic tanks, desludging and flushing of sewage pipelines.
The nine camps are located in Qasr ben Ghashir, Abu salim, Janzour in Tripoli, Ajdabiya, Bani Waleed, Tarhuna and Benghazi. Currently the population of the camps is exceeding 8700 persons, most of them women and children.
