UNICEF estimates that only 16 percent of rural Cambodians have access to adequate sanitation and 65 per cent to safe water. Urban communities fare better, but most Cambodians still live in the countryside.

Many households don't have basic sanitation facilities or awareness of good hygiene. There is no toilet, and no soap for washing hands at home or in school. Children are particularly vulnerable to unhealthy environments.
