Main sequences: In January 2007, a 22-year-old woman died of avian influenza in Lagos, Nigeria. Although outbreaks among poultry had been reported in Nigeria since February 2006, this was the first human casualty. Targeting high-risk groups such as poultry traders, the government – supported by UNICEF and the Government of Japan – has made awareness and education key components in the fight against bird flu.
