News noteAfghan Region: UNICEF Ready to Assist
Along with the rest of the United Nations family, UNICEF is ready to provide humanitarian relief in the Afghanistan region as soon as the situation allows. UNICEF field offices throughout the region have been pre-positioning relief supplies and preparing to assist children and women both inside Afghanistan and in neighboring countries, as needed. One of those offices, a field unit in the town of Quetta, Pakistan, was burned by a mob during street demonstrations on Monday 8 October. No UNICEF staff were in the office at the time and no one was injured. An adjacent office of the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) was stoned during the incident. As the situation stabilizes and as more information about humanitarian needs becomes available, UNICEF and its sister agencies will work to deliver food, medicine, clothing, blankets, water purification tablets and other vital relief.
