UNICEF Executive Director arrives today in Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK/NEW YORK, 28 June, 2011 — UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake will embark on a visit to the Kyrgyz Republic to see the progress made for children following a period of political upheaval and violence a year ago.

The agenda of the visit includes meetings with the President Roza Otunbayeva, Prime Minister Almazbek Atambayev, Speaker of the Parliament Akhmatbek Keldibekov, the heads of UN agencies and partners within the donor community and nongovernmental sector.

The Executive Director will visit Osh in southern Kyrgyzstan. He will open a Youth Center in Asanchek village, meet UNICEF partners in the Maternity House of Kara Suu, and visit a day-care center for vulnerable children in Shark village. Mr. Lake will also meet the Director General of the State Directorate for Reconstruction and Development of Osh and Jalal-Abad cities.

On his last day of the visit, Mr. Lake will visit the Rehabilitation Center for Homeless and Street Children in Bishkek, where he will talk with young people.

That same day, Mr. Lake will participate in the launch of the joint UNICEF and World Bank report, Situational Analysis - Improving Economic Outcomes by Expanding Nutrition Programming in the Kyrgyz Republic. The report will highlight the hidden problem of undernutrition and call for more investments in good nutrition.
