WHAT:
Panel discussion, campaign launch and media briefing
A distinguished panel will discuss the importance of the Optional Protocols for the protection of children against all forms of violence, Member States’ experiences with the ratification and implementation of the two Protocols and civil society’s role in creating further momentum for universal ratification. Media queries will be addressed during the noon-briefing.
WHY:
The 25th of May marks the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Optional Protocols to the Convention on the Rights of the Child. UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, UN representatives, Member States, independent experts and civil society will celebrate the importance of these treaties for the protection of children against all forms of violence. During the event two two-year campaigns, one for each Protocol will be kicked off with the purpose to achieve their universal ratification by 2012.
