Mr. Bernt Aasen was appointed UNICEF Regional Director for Latin America and Caribbean, effective 1 August 2009.
Prior to this assignment, Mr. Aasen served as Director and Chief of Staff, in New York, since December 2007. In this capacity, he managed the Office of the Executive Director and provided advice on policy and management issues to the Executive Director and Deputy Executive Directors.
From 2006 to 2007, Mr. Aasen served as Senior Advisor/Deputy Director a.i. in the Office of Emergency Programmes and as Director in charge of UN coherence issues.
Mr. Aasen led the preparation of Joint UN Programmes supporting the Afghan National Development Strategy as UNICEF Representative in Afghanistan from 2004 to 2006.
From 2002 to 2004, Mr. Aasen served as the UN Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator and Chief of Operation Lifeline Sudan. In this capacity, he established the Capacity Building Trust Fund for South Sudan; coordinating assistance from the UN and more than 40 national and international NGOs.
In Latin America, Mr. Aasen served as UNICEF Representative in Mexico (2000-2002) and in Nicaragua (1997-2000). He also served the Guatemala Area Office as Project Officer in Honduras and as Head of Office in Panama.
Mr. Aasen is a national of Norway. In 1981 he earned his Candidatus Magisterii in World History, Literature, Languages and Social Pedagogies from the University of Oslo, Norway. In 1979, he obtained a certificate in Spanish from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.
