NEW YORK, 30 September 2004 - UNICEF said that the killing of dozens of children in bombings in Baghdad today showed a disregard for innocent lives that recalled the recent massacre of children in Beslan, Russia.
Speaking as she concluded a visit to storm-ravaged Haiti, UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy said that the death of at least 34 children in car bomb attacks was “an unconscionable slaughter of innocents.”
“It’s obvious that no regard was shown for the presence of children near the targets," Bellamy said. "The killing of children is a crime and a moral outrage. Children should never have to pay the price for adult conflict. We call on those who command combatants to do whatever is necessary to keep children from harm.”
Bellamy added that Iraq is one of the most dangerous places in the world for children.
