Reaching out to a growing Internet viewership in the RegionDUBAI, April 6 2005 – Following remarkable success of Dubai’s support to the southeast Asia tsunami crisis, UNICEF’s Director of the Division of Communication, Sharad Sapra, today launched the organisation’s global website in Arabic at the Dubai Media City, a futuristic media complex where IT innovation and communication expertise come together.
With the Arab region in the spotlight of global news attention, this new website is expected to provide Arab navigators of all ages with quick reference material, online news and up to date information on global issues related to UNICEF’s mandate in favour of children.
“There is a big gap in the use of Internet and Internet content in Arabic. This often leads to a gap in the understanding of various cultures in the world”, Sharad Sapra told regional and local media attendees. “Through this website, we want to make a small contribution in introducing the issues affecting children and action being taken to address their needs in a proper and efficient manner”, he concluded.
This new website in Arabic joins the family of UNICEF language websites, with millions of pages viewed and tens of thousands of video downloads each month. The site is available at www.unicef.org/arabic/.
