UNICEF launches report showing world is falling short on promise to reduce child deaths
With Goal of Two-Thirds Reduction by 2015, 98 Countries Are Off the Mark; AIDS and Conflict Send Some Nations Spiralling in Wrong Direction
Who: Carol Bellamy, UNICEF Executive Director
What: Press conference to launch the report and a call to action for the world’s political, industry and media leaders
Where: UNICEF House, Danny Kaye Visitor’s Centre, Three UN Plaza (44th Street btw First and Second Avenues)
When: Thursday, October 7, 11:00am (embargoed to 00.01 GMT, Friday 8 October)
Why: ‘Progress for Children’ is a reprise of the report formerly known as ‘Progress of Nations’. It will appear three times a year, with each edition focusing on a different Millennium Development Goal as it relates to children.
‘Progress for Children’ reveals global gains in child survival since 1990, but also significant discrepancies within regions. It also offers a summary of trends for each region, including industrialized countries. Tables rank each country within their respective regions on progress made on child survival since 1990, and the progress that must be made by 2015 in order to reach the MDG of a two-thirds reduction in under-five mortality in every country.
