UNICEF Deputy Exec. Dir. Toshiyuki Niwa to visit Egypt

CAIRO, 20 May 2004 – The Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF, Mr Toshiyuki Niwa begins a visit to Egypt on Friday during which he will meet senior government officials and representatives of other UN agencies based in Cairo.

During his three-day stay, Mr Niwa will meet the Minister of Education, Dr Hussein Kamal Baha Edin, and the Minister of Health and Population, Dr Mohamed Awad Tag-Eddien. He is also expected to be received by Her Excellency the First Lady, Mrs Suzanne Mubarak, and to call on the Prime Minister, Dr Atef Ebeid.

On Saturday, Mr Niwa is to travel to Qena where he will visit community schools supported by UNICEF, as well as meeting governorate officials and representatives of local non-governmental organizations.

As UNICEF deputy executive director, Mr Niwa is responsible for finance, supply, human resources and other administrative issues within the organization. Before taking up his post in March 2004, Mr Niwa had a varied and distinguished career with the United Nations.
