Prior to her appointment as Regional Director for Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States in Geneva, Switzerland, Ms. Maria Calivis served as UNICEF Representative in New Delhi, India since December 2000.

Ms. Calivis joined UNICEF in January 1983 as Assistant Project Officer, Education, in Beirut, Lebanon.  From April to November 1985, she was on special assignment to the West Bank and Gaza.  In November 1985, she was transferred to Conakry, Guinea, as Programme Officer.  In January 1989, she transferred to New York as Senior Recruitment and Staff Development Officer where she served until 1991 where she was granted study leave.  In 1993, she was appointed UNICEF Representative in Tunisia, a position she held for three years.  Ms. Calivis transferred to New York in January 1997 as Director, Change Management in the Office of the Executive Director.

Before joining UNICEF, Ms Calivis was a Training Officer in the Training Division at Gestione e Partecipazione Industriale (GEPI) in Rome, Italy (1980-1982).

Ms Calivis is a national of Italy.  She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the American University, Cairo, Egypt in 1977.  In 1980, she obtained her Master of Arts degree in International Relations from the Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies in Washington DC, USA.  In 1991, she also obtained a Master of Science degree in Social Policy and Planning from the London School of Economics.

Ms. Calivis assumed her duties as Regional Director in Geneva, Switzerland on 10 February 2004.
