WHAT: Now an autumn institution, the 11th annual Women of Distinction Breakfast, sponsored by The Girl Scout Council of Greater New York, will be held Thursday, October 30, 2003 at the New York Marriott Marquis. The event honors seven exceptional women leaders in New York City who, as role models, exemplify the Council’s mission to help girls grow into outstanding women. Deborah Norville, anchor of Inside Edition and a Council Board Member, will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies.
WHEN: The Women of Distinction Breakfast will begin promptly at 7:15 A.M. on Thursday, October 30th, in the Broadway Ballroom of the New York Marriott Marquis, located on Broadway between 45th and 46th streets. Over 500 guests are expected to attend. The event is open to the public; tickets are $150. For information, please call 212-645-4000, extension 340 or 247.
WHY: “Our 25,000 girls definitely need positive role models,” says Susan M. Greenbaum, Chief Executive Officer of The Girl Scout Council of Greater New York. She continues, “And our seven Women of Distinction provide exceptional examples of what women can achieve in the Arts, Journalism, Education, Business, Government, and International Affairs. This is a powerful message to our Girl Scouts as they plan and prepare for their futures.”
The Girl Scout Irving Berlin Chorus will kick off the Breakfast by performing “God Bless America.” The song has a special connection to The Girl Scout Council of Greater New York because Irving Berlin donated the royalties of “God Bless America” to The Council, along with the city’s Boy Scouts.
Beginning this year, the God Bless America Fund will underwrite the $1,000 Irving Berlin Scholarship. Senior Girl Scout Lisa Richardson, a senior at Brooklyn Technical High School, will be the first recipient of the scholarship as this year’s Future Woman of Distinction awardee.
