In June 2010, UNICEF Mali promoted key life-saving gestures in partnership with the cycling race 'Tour d'Afrique' as it passed through the country.

Encouraging Malian families to follow simple, healthy practices is essential in lowering the staggering child and maternal mortality rates in Mali.

These are:

immediate and exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life;
sleeping under an insecticide-treated bed net;
washing hands with soap and water before meals, after using the bathroom, and after changing a baby;
vaccinating children against preventable disease in their first year of life.
