UNICEF has developed a Strategic Framework for Partnerships and Collaborative Relationships to help the organisation become more coherent and strategic when working with and through others to achieve results for children. The value of a partnership lies in combining the complementary strengths of two or more parties to leverage synergies.

UNICEF Mali focuses on developing strategic partnerships and long-term alliances to “make money work” for children, in line with the Millennium Development Goals. Our policy leverages resources for children through advocacy focused on:

  • furthering the realization of children and women’s rights;
  • scaling up key basic social services and social protection interventions favor of the most vulnerable.

UNICEF Mali works with a broad range of partners based on our conviction that such relationships and collaborations are critical to achieve the best possible results for children. In addition to the Government of Mali, our primary partner, we collaborate with Civil Society Organisations including children and youth organisations and knowledge institutions, the media, the Corporate Sector, other United Nations Agencies, Funds, Programmes and Foundations.

Our guiding principles for partnerships are:

Focus on delivering results for the most disadvantaged children and communities and promoting the rights of ALL children. UNICEF Mali engages in partnerships that provide a clearly defined added value to our shared goal of achievement of the MDGs through the implementation of the Millennium Declaration, the the Convention on the Rights of the Child, UNICEF’s strategic priorities and work plans. Our partnerships are based on approaches that are successful in reaching the most marginalised to maximize advances for children to survive and thrive.

Partner selection criteria. UNICEF Mali partners with organisations and entities who: are committed to the core principles of UNICEF, the United Nations and the Convention on the Rights of the Child; function with good governance, including transparency, accountability and sound financial management; and who offer specific skills, resources and abilities to the partnership that complement UNICEF’s core competencies.

Alignment and ownership. The activities of partnerships are aligned with and complement harmonised donor policies, national development plans, and foster ownership and capacity building to realise children’s rights.

Transparency and equity. The objectives and activities of partnerships are fully transparent, involve mutual contributions as well as shared risks and benefits for all partners;

Integrity and independence. Partnerships maintain UNICEF’s integrity and independence and protect the organisation’s brand;

Cost-effectiveness. Partnerships should seek to minimise the administrative and financial burden they impose on partners;

Form of cooperation. In its relations with others, UNICEF Mali promotes cooperation that is most appropriate to the goals pursued, which can be a formal partnership or a collaborative relationship. If collaboration involves the transfer of funds or other resources, a written, legally enforceable agreement is required under UNICEF procedures.
