UNICEF commits additional $1.7 million USD to supporting Teacher Resource Centres

MALE’, Maldives, 10 December 2007 – At the official launch of the 20 Teacher Resource Centres across the Maldives, held in Male’, 26 November, UNICEF Representative Ken Maskall announced the agency’s continuous support to this revolutionary initiative.

The Teacher Resource Centres (TRCs) – now available in each of the 20 atolls of the Maldives - provide teachers and students with broadband internet resources, expanding training and on-line learning opportunities for both teachers and students.

During his speech at the inauguration ceremony, which was honored by the President of the Maldives His Excellency Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Mr. Maskall unveiled the new commitment – a further funding of $1.7 million USD (or 22 million Maldivian Rufiya) to the TRCs until the end of 2008.

Mr. Maskall stated UNICEF’s plans for the money - to provide broadband Internet connectivity to up to 100 more schools using the already existing microwave relay and wifi infrastructure. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, TRCs are part of a broader programme with the Ministry of Education and UNICEF to bring an improved quality of education to every Maldivian child.
