Education for allThe State of the World's Children Forum
While Malaysia has achieved tremendous advances for her children since independence, the challenge now is to address the ethnic, spatial and socioeconomic disparities that affect the lives of children in rural and remote areas, as well as those from indigenous, migrant and other vulnerable communities. Disparities in access to education mean that certain groups of children are left behind and unable to fulfil their potential, while left vulnerable to exploitation and other threats like risk behaviours. Children should also receive quality education that is relevant and prepares them to be in control of their lives as well as respect the rights of others. Education for All, a day-long forum by UNICEF and the Malaysian Bar Council on 20 November 2009 will discuss every child's right to receive an education regardless of who they are, where they come from and where they live. Her Excellency Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah bt Mohd Ali (wife of the former Prime Minister) and her daughter and social advocate Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir will officiate the opening of the Forum with the launch of UNICEF's flagship report The State of the World's Children special anniversary edition on children and their rights. The Forum is by invitation only and is organised in conjunction with the 20th Anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
