More girls than boys stay in education to advanced level
Educating girls is key to development since education provides girls with economic opportunities and choices throughout their lifetime. In Malaysia enrolment rates of girls are equal to, or exceed, those of boys at all levels of schooling. Literacy rates among women stood at 88.1 per cent in 2004, rising from 85.4 per cent in 2000 due to an improved education system. The enrolment of girls in schools reflects the country’s gender ratio; and an affordable education that bridged gender disparities in secondary and primary education. At the tertiary level, the enrolment of women outnumber men, although enrolment in PhD programs are lower for women. Women in Malaysia tend to display a higher inclination than males for arts, science and technology subjects, rather than for technical and vocational training.
