Child rights bags two golds at Kancil Awards 2009
Eleven out of thirteen student advertising and design awards won for works on the Convention on the Rights of the Child By Indra Kumari Nadchatram KUALA LUMPUR, 1 November 2009 – Children’s rights received two golds at the prestigious Kancil Awards, Malaysia’s annual advertising awards by the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents Malaysia (4As). Both the winning entries – “Bricks” and “Child for Sale” are anchored on the 20th Anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, one of two themes selected by the organiser for this year’s Kancil Student Award. “Bricks” produced by Limkokwing University’s Alice and Iwan highlights the plight of thousands of child labourers engaged in the brick industry while The One Academy’s Chua Tor Siang, Lew Chai Ling and Chang Siew Junn designed “Child for Sale” to draw attention to exploitation of children through early marriage, child labour and war. Children, the real winners
UNICEF Representative to Malaysia and Special Representative to Brunei, Mr. Youssouf Oomar expressed his delight in learning that eleven out of thirteen awards were presented for projects relating to children. “The students’ works show amazing insight into the challenges faced by hundreds of thousands of vulnerable children around the world,” said Mr. Youssouf. “Because of their courage to draw attention to child exploitation, the real winners today are children”. Adopted on 20 November 1989 by the United Nations General Assembly, the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) was created to protect the most basic rights of children including their right to an identity; healthcare; education; shelter; safety and special protection in times of war.
