Education in Malaysia

Great strides have been made in providing quality education for children here, but challenges remain. UNICEF’s work in Malaysia is anchored on the same goal that drives Schools for Asia – providing safe, inclusive learning environments for all children, especially the most marginalised. Our activities include:

§ Setting up an education centre to provide basic and life-skills education to refugee and undocumented children, in collaboration with Malaysia’s Ministry of Education, the Malaysia Teachers’ Foundation and the Sabah Special Task Force. UNICEF aims for the school to serve as a model for a nationwide effort that will benefit an estimated 44,000 out-of-school children.

§ Working with Malaysia’s Ministry of Education to develop a database to track out-of-school children, including students who have dropped out of school. Linked to the Educational Management Information System (EMIS), information in the database will enable the introduction of targeted interventions to reduce school dropouts.

§ Partnering with Malaysia’s Ministry of Education to develop and pilot the internet-based Individualised Education Plan (IEP) to benefit over 20,000 students with special learning needs, enabling them to learn at their own pace according to their skill base and individual capacities.

§ In collaboration with the Sultan Idris Education University, undertaking an assessment of the quality of education provided by the Humana Child Aid Society for children living in plantations. The assessment will be used as an advocacy tool in getting more plantation companies to provide basic education for children on their plantations.
