What: Launch of Kg. Bahagia Education Centre for Undocumented Children in Sabah

When: Saturday, 21 September 2013, 9.30 am – 12:30 pm

Who: YB Mary Yap, Deputy Minister of Education

Datuk Mohamed Thajudeen bin Abdul Wahab,    Secretary, National Security Council, PM's Department

Datuk Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Muhammad Salleh,    Director, Federal Special Task Force (Sabah / Labuan)

Dr. Faridah Abu Hassan, Director, Educational Planning    and Research Division, Ministry of Education

Mr. Victor Karunan, UNICEF Deputy Representative to    Malaysia

Where: Kg Bahagia Learning Centre, Sandakan, Sabah

Why: Over the last 50 years, Malaysia has made enormous advances in education with a continuous focus on access to, equity and quality education. While Malaysia has achieved significant and commendable progress, more must be done to ensure access for the poor, marginalised and the excluded to education.

Despite the provision for compulsory education, there are still pockets of children who are not enrolled in schools. In line with the Education for All initiative, UNICEF in collaboration with the Federal Special Task Force (Sabah / Labuan) and the Ministry of Education have set up a school in Kg Bahagia to provide basic education for undocumented children in Sandakan, the 2nd such school in Sabah. This unique educational initiative by UNICEF in Malaysia is hoped to serve as a model that can be replicated to meet the needs of all undocumented children through Government programs and public/private partnerships.
