Disabled children to stamp their abilities with “Colours of My World”

NEWS RELEASE

Artwork from nationwide art contest for children with disabilities to be used in Caring Society commemorative stamps and first day cover for Universal Children's Day 2013.

KUALA LUMPUR, 8 May 2013 – Children with disabilities in Malaysia will get the chance to explore and exercise their creativity through the nationwide "Colours of My World" art contest, organised by Kakikreatif, Pos Malaysia and UNICEF to honour and celebrate the abilities of disabled children.

Children between the ages of 13 and 17 years old who have been diagnosed with a physical, sensory or developmental disability are invited to submit their original artwork to illustrate their life, as well as their dreams and hopes for themselves and for Malaysia.

"This art contest is an eye opening way of seeing the world through the perspectives of children with disabilities," said UNICEF Representative to Malaysia, Ms. Wivina Belmonte. "It is a critical reminder for the rest of us that what is most important are the abilities that define these children -- not their disabilities. Given the chance, children with disabilities can be agents of change, like all children. And like all other children they have a right to be heard. It is empowering for them and revealing for us."

Celebrating ability with stamps

The "Colours of My World" art contest, launched in conjunction with the 5th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) on 8 May, focuses on the abilities of children with disabilities, encouraging greater public understanding, acceptance and inclusion.

"Pos Malaysia lauds the various initiatives coordinated by UNICEF to promote the rights of children worldwide and we are proud to demonstrate our support. This is our second collaboration to produce stamps on children's rights and we are honoured to be a partner of UNICEF and Kakikreatif for the 'Colours of My World' art contest," said Encik Mohd Shukrie Mohd Salleh, Covering Group Chief Executive Officer of Pos Malaysia.

"Too often, children with disabilities are made to feel that there is no place for them, that they don't count and have nothing to contribute. Their invisibility robs society of a valuable resource. Which is why Pos Malaysia is truly honoured to be a part of an initiative that will celebrate disabled children and provide them with a meaningful media to showcase their talents whereby their artwork will be featured in our stamps for all Malaysians and the world to appreciate," Encik Mohd Shukrie added.

Winning entries from each of the three disability categories will be used to create Pos Malaysia's Caring Society commemorative stamps and first day cover. Pos Malaysia will also award each of the three winners with a cash prize of RM 10,000. This is the second initiative between Malaysia's postal service and UNICEF. In 2009, Pos Malaysia joined forces with UNICEF to create the Caring Society stamp set to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Magic of colours

Given the important role of "colours" on a child's mood, development and learning, the art contest has incorporated the word into its theme "Colours of My World". Children participating in the contest are encouraged to take inspiration from the word when creating their artwork by allowing their imagination and creativity free rein to express their realities, dreams and hopes.

"Colours have a beautiful magical quality, providing children with the stimulation that helps them learn and think creatively," said Kakikreatif Executive Director, Low Ngai Yuen. "We hope that the young artists taking part in this contest will be spontaneous in the use of colours, and will let their emotions and their energies flow in a natural way, straight from their heart."

The deadline for submission of artwork is 20 June 2013. Children who wish to participate in the contest can download the Entry Forms at www.unicef.my from 8 May onwards. All winners will be notified by Kakikreatif and invited to the launch of the commemorative stamps and first day cover on 22 October 2013.
