UNICEF on standby to respond to needs of children following Indonesia quake

NEWS RELEASE

JAKARTA, 11 April 2012 – A massive earthquake has just struck off the west coast of Indonesia. While the extent of damage has yet to be ascertained, UNICEF Indonesia's immediate concerns are for the safety of children, who make up one-third of the population and the agency stands ready to support any requests for assistance should they arise.

In the aftermath of such emergencies, the main priorities are always to ensure that affected children and families have access to life-saving care including clean water, nutrition, shelter and sanitation. In addition, as populations move rapidly to seek safety, UNICEF will be monitoring any potential risk of children becoming separated from their families.

UNICEF has an office in Banda Aceh. All staff are safe and well, and are ready to respond to any urgent needs that may arise.
