International Children's Day of BroadcastingSunday, 1 March 2009 On 20 November 2009, the world over will celebrate 20 years of the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). While the Convention has realised remarkable achievements for children across several continents, millions still do not fully enjoy their rights, including their right to self-expression and participation. There is so much about this world that young people need to learn – from politics and history to culture and ethics. And it’s important to tell these stories in a way that sparks young people’s interests and invites them to join in the conversation. The International Children’s Day of Broadcasting (ICDB) was created to do just that. An initiative by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), ICDB is anchored on the CRC which says that all children have the right, amongst others, to:
With these rights in mind, UNICEF works to create channels for more children in more circumstances to speak out and be heard. When children and young people use media to express themselves, it can create awareness in their communities and influence decision-making. Rights-based media projects can also change adults’ perceptions of children and create opportunities to confront difficult problems like abuse and exploitation. They can lead to more child-friendly communities, where positive role models lead to greater respect for children’s rights and opinions. This year’s ICDB, which falls on Sunday, 1 March, is more meaningful than ever as it can set the tone and inspire governments and civil society, child rights activists, youth and children, parents and teachers to honour 20 years of children’s rights. UNICEF is working with television and radio broadcasters around the world to Unite for Children: Tune in to Kids! What do children and young people care about most? What are their values, fears and dreams? Many children around the world share the same ideals, even if their lives are vastly different. ‘Tune in to Kids!’ will give us a platform to hear their opinions, see their perspectives and listen to their stories. It’s a wonderful start to engaging with children, and giving them the space they so rightly deserve to participate in society.
