List of Expert Speakers

Dr. June Kane is an internationally respected expert in human rights, specifically in the fields of violence against children and women, child labour, sexual abuse and exploitation of children, and human trafficking. As an Independent Expert since 1996, Dr Kane has worked with governments, UN agencies (particularly the ILO and UNICEF), regional bodies and grassroots organisations on a wide range of initiatives. Her work has covered research and writing; strategy, program and policy planning; capacity building; evaluation and monitoring. She has a profound understanding of current issues in child labour/ trafficking and in 2008 developed the first anti-child trafficking training manual and resource kit for UN.GIFT, the UN’s global initiative to fight human trafficking.

Ka Ho Mok is Associate Dean and Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Hong Kong. Before he joined the University of Hong Kong, he was a Chair Professor in East Asian Studies and the Founding Director of the Centre for East Asian Studies at the University of Bristol. His primary area of research is comparative education policy, with particular reference to development and education governance change in East Asia. Other research interests include social developments and social policy in contemporary China.

Dr. Santosh Mehrotra is an independent expert currently serving the Government of India as senior advisor for rural development, economic adviser for the social sectors within the Planning Commission, and leading the team developing the next India Human Development Report. Prior to his current engagement, he worked with the United Nations for 15 years. He served as Regional Economic Advisor at UNDP’s Regional Centre for Asia, chief economist for UNDP’s global Human Development Report and he also led UNICEF’s research programme on developing countries at Innocenti Research Centre, Florence.

Dr. M. Ramesh is Professor of Social Policy in the Department of Social Work and Social Administration at the University of Hong Kong. Previously, he held teaching positions at the National University of Singapore, University of Sydney, University of New England and Victoria University of Wellington. His teaching and research is concentrated in public policy and political economy in Asia. His recent publications have been in the area of public policy and governance in income maintenance and health policy sectors in Asia.

Dr. Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta comes from a family of physicians and educationalists from Peshawar (Pakistan). He graduated from Khyber Medical College in 1977. After training positions in Pakistan, he went to the United Kingdom for his higher professional training. After obtaining the membership in Paediatrics in 1981, he was a fellow and lecturer in neonatal paediatrics at the University Department of Child Health, Bristol. He obtained a PhD in Nutrition from the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, and is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh as well as the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (UK).
