Young Malaysians to speak up on issues affecting their lives

KUALA LUMPUR, 8 December 2006

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Malaysia invites a journalist and photographer to cover the following event :

What:  
Youth Speak Out –  A Youth Dialogue with the Chairman of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child and UNICEF Representative to Malaysia

When: 
Tuesday, 12 December 2006 ; 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm (dinner follows from 7pm – 9pm)

Who: 
- Professor Jaap E Doek, Chairman, United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child

- Ms. Gaye Phillips, UNICEF Representative, Malaysia & UNICEF Special Representative, Brunei and Singapore

- Celina Khor and Rafidah Abdullah, UNICEF Malaysia Goodwill Ambassadors and 3R TV Hosts

- 50 young people aged 15 – 22 years old representing :

  • PROSTAR-UNICEF Youth Centres in Kedah (HIV/AIDS)
  • AIESEC and Standard Chartered Bank’s “AIDS Champions” program (HIV/AIDS)
  • Rotary Club of Cyberjaya Interactors (HIV/AIDS)
  • HELP-UNICEF Mentoring Malaysia (violence in schools)
  • Department of Social Welfare and UNICEF Child Rights Workshops
  • UNICEF-EMPOWER Youth Program (tsunami child survivors)
  • Tree Theatre Group (environment)
  • Malaysian Childrens TV Foundation (children in the media) 

Where: 
Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur – Sultan Ballroom 1

Why:
The Dialogue will provide young people from several UNICEF supported programs with a platform to discuss issues confronting their generation today.
