Recognising flu like symptoms

© UNICEF/Create!

Influenza is an infectious illness that spreads from person to person, mainly through coughing or sneezing of infected people.

While a common cold starts gradually and usually only causes a mild sore throat, a cough and sneezing, and a stuffy, running nose; influenza is often more serious and limits our ability to continue with normal activities.

Influenza symptoms include:

  • Sudden onset of fever over 38° Celsius
  • Aching muscles and headache
  • Extreme tiredness and a desire to stay in bed
  • Dry cough
  • Runny or stuffy nose, sometimes a sore throat
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhea and vomiting (some reported cases)

Confirmatory testing for Influenza A(H1N1) is only done for severe cases that require hospital admission.
