Sri Lanka Crisis 2009
“Sennappu had a split second, literally a heartbeat to throw her body around her 18 month-old daughter before the bomb landed. Her shielding body saved the life of her baby girl. Sennappu was killed instantly.” Read It is urgent that we act now for the survival and recovery of children and women in Sri Lanka. Already, we are struggling to care for over 200,000 people displaced by the Sri Lanka conflict. We expect the number to reach at least a quarter of a million. Thousands of victims are children. Some have been wounded or recruited, others separated from their families. Almost all are displaced and denied their every day needs and basic rights. We are desperately short of funds to provide them with clean water, medicines, sanitation and nourishment. UNICEF and our partners are working around the clock to provide millions of litres of water, constructing latrines, supporting mother and child health, establishing nutritional centres, building learning spaces for children, attempting to reunify separated children and caring for children who have been brutally orphaned by this conflict. It is hard to overstate how urgent this crisis has become, which is why we need your help today! 30 May 2009 UNICEF is not funded by the United Nations. We depend entirely on voluntary contributions like yours. All donations to this Appeal are tax-deductible. ..........................................................................................
