In 2006, in response to lessons learned from the tsunami, the Ministry of Education and UNICEF embarked on a School Emergency Preparedness Program to develop practical guidelines for emergency preparedness planning for school children in Malaysia.

The program will include an Emergency Preparedness Guide produced with student participation which will be used to complement a manual for the Ministry’s officials and educators.

Aside from creating awareness among school children to minimise the likelihood of injury or death when dealing with critical natural disaster, the Guide will also document real life experiences of school children.
