Nine-year-old Nur Alia tells her counsellor, Dr. Sarimah Bt Sudin, about her recurring nightmares of the big black wave.

UNICEF is collaborating with HELP University College and the Kedah State Health Department to provide training in psychosocial and mental health management.

Sixty community leaders comprising teachers, paramedics, village chieftains and religious officials were trained in 2005 to provide Post Trauma Stress Disorder (PTSD) counseling to benefit at least 1,000 children and their families in Kuala Muda Kedah and Langkawi.

In 2006 and 2007, UNICEF’s on-going program will contribute to a long term active and effective psychosocial health support and referral network which can act as a model for other communities in the country to adopt while at the same time, feeding into the Government’s national emergency preparedness program.
