UNIVERSAL CHILDREN'S DAY 2012
Each November, UNICEF Malaysia come up with a different theme to celebrate Universal Children’s Day.
For 2012, we decided to recognise the diversity of children in Malaysia and to listen to what they had to say. From the multitude of ideas, opinions and actions they shared, one overarching banner emerged that would do justice to their voices and interests – child participation.
At the heart of child participation is Article 12 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which upholds every child’s right to be heard. Child participation matters because:
1. children see and experience the world differently than adults.
2. a part of a child’s healthy development is about engaging with society and the world around them.
3. at every age, children are capable of more than what they are routinely given credit for.
4. children have proved, time and again, that when they are involved, they can make a real and powerful difference in the world around them.
Children4Change is our 2012 Universal Children’s Day theme to honour every child’s right to participation. The month-long initiative in November will promote opportunities for children to participate, and in so doing, create awareness about the benefits of child participation, to children themselves and to society.
Please join us. Let’s give children their rightful space in society. With them as our partners, we can create the change needed to build a world fit for all.
