eclipse raises RM150,000 for UNICEF Malaysia’s “Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS” campaign
KUALA LUMPUR, 15 January 2007 – Mr. Sonny San, a true veteran in the Malaysian fashion and retail industry has tailored his creativity, enthusiasm and trendsetting ideas for the good of children in Malaysia.
What started out as a project to celebrate eclipse’s 10th anniversary was elegantly transformed overnight into a philanthropic corporate campaign, with San raising a total of RM 150,000 (US$ 40,872) for UNICEF Malaysia’s Unite for Children, Unite Against AIDS campaign, exceeding his original pledge of RM 100,000.
“UNICEF Malaysia applauds Sonny San and the team at eclipse for their dedication, enthusiasm and creative efforts to spotlight the impact of HIV on children using the high visibility and reach of the fashion industry as their platform. eclipse has used positive trends in fashion to raise much needed funds for UNICEF and fight the stigma and discrimination which continue to challenge efforts to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS,” said Ms. Gaye Phillips, UNICEF Representative to Malaysia and UNICEF Special Representative to Singapore and Brunei.
Mr. San’s charitable contribution is timely in view of the rising number of HIV cases in the country. Malaysia has recorded more than 74,000 HIV cases since the first case was detected in 1986. New infections are doubling every three years in the country with an average of 17 people testing HIV-positive daily. Almost forty per cent of Malaysia’s HIV cases occur in people below the age of 29. A lack of knowledge about HIV is one of the main reasons for the rapid spread of the epidemic and its related stigma and discrimination. Cultural sensitivities often prevent an open discussion on the subject. Silence, ignorance and complacency are the biggest obstacles in the fight to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.
The stylish curtain-raising charity campaign which kicked-off on 1 September 2006 with “Desire: The Fashion Party” was held together with Motorola. The party unveiled the much anticipated, first ever prêt a couture eclipse LUXE collection by Sonny San and an exciting auction of eclipse’s "10 years of Allure" collection – a revival of eclipse’s 10 key signature pieces selected from the past decade. Supporting UNICEF Malaysia for the auction was Motorola, who provided six Swarovski MOTORAZR V3i handphones with customised decorations. All proceeds of the auction went to UNICEF Malaysia.
Supporting San in his campaign were three of Malaysia's iconic designers, Datuk Tom Abang Saufi, Khoon Hooi and Gillian Hung who came together to design the exclusive limited edition “Designed for eclipse, Designers unite for UNICEF” collection of shoes and handbags which eclipse fully funded. From 1 September to 30 November 2006, 100% of the sales generated from the “Designed for eclipse” collection went directly to UNICEF Malaysia’s “Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS” campaign.
Eclipse maximised its campaign by mixing charity with education and awareness. Through a creative mix of print and electronic advertisement as well as in-store promotions and branding, eclipse reached out and promoted the Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS campaign to more than 2 million of Malaysia’s public.
“We were confident that the public would reach out and support fashion with a cause, but we were very delighted at the number of Malaysians that came through with their generous support. I am pleased to say that Malaysians still strongly believe in charity and in giving to the less fortunate and I hope that they are now more aware of the plight many children still face today, even in our very own country” said Sonny San, eclipse’s founder, Managing Director and Designer-in-Chief.
Looking forward, San believes that it is important for eclipse, as a corporation, to make continuing efforts to raise awareness and educate the public about issues facing children in Malaysia. "With reports of violence against children as well as HIV and substance abuse cases on the rise, it is extremely important to heighten the awareness campaigns and eclipse will continue to play its part to champion this cause," added the designer with a heart.
