Every year around the world, thousands of children die from injuries, while countless more are seriously hurt. Many of these injuries lead to permanent disability and brain damage. The most common injuries are caused by falls, burns, drowning and road accidents. Sadly, most of these injuries happen in or near the home. And almost all can be prevented.

Due to rapid urbanisation in Malaysia, traffic congestion has also led to an increase in traffic accidents. Over 300,000 traffic accidents were reported in 2004 compared to 290,000 cases in 2003. In 2004 alone, 6,000 Malaysians lost their lives on roads.  These accidents have resulted in child deaths and disability. In some cases, it has also left children without fathers and/or mothers.
