WIVINA BELMONTE
UNICEF Representative, Malaysia
July 2012 -

Ms. Wivina Belmonte UNICEF Representative, Malaysia

Ms. Wivina Belmonte assumed the leadership of UNICEF's country program in Malaysia in July 2012. Ms Belmonte has been with UNICEF since 2001, most recently serving as Deputy Director of Communications at UNICEF's headquarters in New York.

As Deputy Director, Ms. Belmonte led and managed UNICEF's global communications network, oversaw the development of a communications and public advocacy strategy for the organisation and led global communications efforts in a number of humanitarian emergencies, including; the Haiti earthquake in 2010, the famine in the Horn of Africa last year and most recently the drought across the Sahel. She also helped design public advocacy efforts in a recently launched global campaign called "Committing to Child Survival; A Promise Renewed".

Ms. Belmonte began her UNICEF career as the organisation's spokesperson at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, and later as UNICEF's Chief of Communications there. In that capacity she was responsible for the development of UNICEF brand awareness in industrialised countries and emerging middle-income countries around the world, building support for UNICEF's mandate and work for children through advocacy and fundraising. In 2005 she served as campaign manager in a global campaign on children and AIDS, co-launched by UNICEF and UNAIDS. Committed to UNICEF's work in middle-income countries, she joined UNICEF's regional office in Latin America and the Caribbean, where she helped design public advocacy efforts for child focused development initiatives in 24 countries.

Prior to joining UNICEF, Ms. Belmonte worked with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Federation (1999-2001) as a project manager, on a global campaign raising HIV/AIDS awareness within the Red Cross movement. The project was recognised by UNAIDS as an example of best organisational practice.

Before working on development issues, Ms. Belmonte was a commentator, analyst and producer with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. In 1992, she was named the network's senior producer based in London. She was the youngest person and only the 2nd woman named to the post, covering historic events in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia through much of the 1990s.

Ms Belmonte has guest-lectured at numerous universities including Harvard University, the University of Ghent, Belgium, Scuola Sant'Anna in Pisa Italy and Universidad Complutense in Madrid, Spain. Her lectures have focused on UNICEF's mission and mandate as outlined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child, as well as issues on using social media to campaign for social good.

She co-authored "Investing in Girls Education – An Opportunity for Corporate Leadership", with Shannon Murphy for the Harvard Kennedy School, Corporate Responsibility Initiative, and wrote an article for the University of Ghent in Belgium, entitled "Child Rights – from theory to practice".

Ms. Belmonte earned her Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government in 2009, specialising in public policy issues, and was the recipient of the Barbara Jordan Award for Women's Leadership. In 1982 she received an undergraduate degree from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, having majored in both international relations and journalism.

She is a national of Spain and Canada, and is fluent in English, French and Spanish.
