Mr. Hans Olsen assumed the leadership of UNICEF’s country program in Malaysia in February 2010, having completed a successful two-year term as the Deputy Director of UNICEF’s Private Fundraising and Partnerships Division in Geneva, Switzerland.

During his time as Deputy Director, Mr. Olsen was responsible for UNICEF’s strategic partnership with National Committees in industrialised countries, building support for UNICEF’s mandate and work for children through Fundraising, Advocacy, Education for Development and Communication.

During 2002 and 2007, Mr. Olsen served UNICEF as the Deputy Regional Director for Europe, responsible for the development of policies, strategies and tools for UNICEF’s collaboration with National Committees worldwide as well as for regional initiatives involving government partners, intergovernmental organisations, parliamentarians and NGOs.

While Mr. Olsen embarked on a career with UNICEF in 1996, his work and commitment to children’s issues, education and development began some twenty years earlier. After graduating from the University of Stockholm in 1974, Mr. Olsen commenced a profession in broadcasting with the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation and Educational Television. While working in news and documentary production he also produced and hosted TV programs for children.

As Producer and Director in television, Mr. Olsen is credited with a list of documentaries, predominantly on social and economic development including topics and countries such as the development strategies of Bhutan, development efforts in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, children and clean water in Northern Namibia, the impact of micro-credits in Nepal and Guatemala, the struggle against desertification in Algeria and the global efforts to eradicate polio.

As a senior consultant during the first half of the 90s, Mr. Olsen also worked with the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, inter alia producing a study on strategies to promote Swedish multilateral assistance with the Swedish general public, as well as with other national and international development and aid organisations.

A national of Sweden, Mr. Olsen is married with two children.
