National Ambassador
Datuk Lee Chong Wei Twenty-seven year-old Datuk Lee Chong Wei is considered a national hero in Malaysian sports, having won the silver medal in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing and ending Malaysia’s Olympic drought since 1996. The World Number One ranked badminton player who has won many international badminton titles in his career was appointed National Ambassador for UNICEF Malaysia in 2009. Role model for youth A respected and successful national athlete, Datuk Lee is a role model for Malaysians, particularly children and young people. This puts him in a powerful position to advocate for children’s rights and to help further UNICEF’s mission in building “A World Fit for Children”. As Datuk Lee has a strong following among young people, he has the ability to encourage them to change their behaviours and attitudes, and adopt a lifestyle free of drugs, HIV and violence. Datuk Lee also believes in promoting sport as a platform to encourage non-violent conflict resolution, as well as to increase youth participation. Using his fame and talents, he also hopes to mobilise support for UNICEF’s fundraising activities to benefit programs for children in Malaysia and around the world.
