UNICEF’S Role
UNICEF is committed to the protection, empowerment and promotion of girls and women and recognises that women's rights are fundamental for the fulfillment of children's rights. § In Malaysia, UNICEF is working with its Government partners to undertake a study on Violence Against Children § UNICEF advocated the passage of the Child Marriage Prohibition Act of 2006 in India, and has since supported the development and implementation of a national strategy on child marriage. § UNICEF supported more than 200 Police Victim Support Centres in Mozambique to assist children and women survivors of violence, abuse and exploitation. Ten model centres are now operational. In addition, we provide support for the implementation of all of the recommendations of the Secretary-General's Study of Violence against Children, with special focus on gender-based violence, and we have produced the publication From Invisible to Indivisible: Promoting and Protecting the Right of the Girl Child to Be Free from Violence.
