The situation of adolescents with HIV will be addressed in a Latin American Forum
Lima, November 13 2009 - A few days to celebrate the World AIDS Day this December 1st, adolescents affected by HIV demand that their needs and concerns should be taken into account by other members of society, among them, the State. This way, they could receive more appropriate services.
Adolescents with HIV expressed their needs in the “First National Meeting of Adolescents Affected by HIV”, organized recently in the country. According to the adolescents, they need not only adequate medication, but also psychological support, sexual education, protection against discrimination and support to their tutors or caretakers.
They expressed that it is important that all the medication that they receive should be adequate for their age (dose for children, nice smell and flavor) because not all the medication that they receive now have paediatric presentations. Due to this, their relatives have to assume the cost of preparing and adapting them.
They also need to receive the complete dose for a month to avoid returning several times to the health centre.
Other demands mentioned in the National Meeting were to get medical and psychological services, to receive support after their diagnosis and to refer patients to hospitals in a short time.
Also, they demand orientation in sexual health and reproductive health issues as adolescents with HIV have to deal with important questions such as: Could I have children? Or Could I have a family?
In addition to this, they consider important to create awareness among teachers, parents and the community to reduce stigma and discrimination towards children and adolescents living with HIV and they demand a wider protection by the State.
The demands of Peruvian children and adolescents affected by HIV will be presented in the “First Latin American and the Caribbean Meeting of Adolescents Affected by HIV”, that will be organized in Lima, within the V Latin American and the Caribbean Forum on HIV/AIDS and STIs, from November 21 to 23.
This First Latin American Meeting is organized by the Childhood, Adolescence and HIV Committee (Mesa Niñez, Adolescencia y VIH/SIDA), with the support of Red Sida Peru and UNICEF.
