UNICEF Germany awards Shakira with “Honorary award for Children’s Rights”
Celebrated international musician supports the appeal to nationwide “UNICEF JuniorAmbassador Competition”
On 21 September 2009 UNICEF Germany has awarded Colombian singer Shakira with the “Honorary award for Children’s Rights”. With this award UNICEF honours the sustainable commitment of the internationally renowned singer and songwriter in mobilizing children and adolescents for a better future.
“With her commitment for children’s rights Shakira encourages children and adolescents worldwide to fight HIV/AIDS, violence and poverty and to engage themselves for the right to education”, said Regine Stachelhaus, Executive Director, UNICEF Germany during the award ceremony at the occasion of BURDA LIVE Lunch in Offenburg, Germany. “Sharika is a citizen of the world and an idol for young people through her commitment to children’s rights.”
This award is a reward for the artist who since 2003 has been a global International UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. At the same time the award ceremony is a starting point for all children and adolescents in Germany to engage in “UNICEF JuniorAmbassador Competition”.
All children and adolescents under the age of 18 who would like to actively advocate for children’s rights are invited to participate. They can present reports, photos, movies or pictures, calendars or CDs out of which a jury identifies the “UNICEF JuniorAmbassador”. The award ceremony will take place in June 2010 at Frankfurt Paulskirche. Last year more than 14,000 children took part in activities nationwide. For further information please go to www.younicef.de
With her foundation “Pies Descalzos” Columbia-born Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll supports school projects in her home country. Together with the international “Barefoot Foundation” she advocates for the right to education globally. In Latin America she launched the artist association ALAS “(Ámerican Latina en Acción Solidaria) which lobbies for early childhood education.
At the occasion of the UNICEF campaign against violence in 2008, Shakira addressed 8,000 children and adolescents and said to them: “We have only one life. Let us live in dignity. Let us start with it today.”
The award ceremony took place at the BURDA LIVE event in Offenburg, Germany. BURDA LIVE is a forum of Burda Medien GmbH for discussions and performances of national and international celebrities.
